A 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey strong on Sunday, the collapse of 45 buildings in the Deputy Minister. Only one death was confirmed immediately, but scientists estimate that up to 1,000 people may have died. The worst damage was caused to the city of Erciş mountain in the eastern province of Van, near the border with Iran. The city of Van also suffered considerable damage. The quake had a depth of 12.4 kilometers, which is relatively shallow and could potentially cause more damage.
“About 10 buildings collapsed in the city of Van and about 25 or 30 is collapsed into ERCIS, including a dormitory,” Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said. Atalay said the authorities had no information yet about the remote villages, adding that the governor was currently touring the area by helicopter to assess the damage. Earthquake’s epicenter was in the Tabanli village. The authorities gave no casualties, but Kandilli Observatory, the center of Turkey’s largest seismic, the earthquake was able to kill many more people.
“We estimate a death toll between 500 and 1000,” Mustafa Erdik, director of the Kandilli Observatory said in a televised news conference. His estimate was based on the structure of houses in the region and the strength of the earthquake. The Turkish Red Crescent said his rescuers pulled more people out of the dormitory collapsed in ERCIS, located on a geological fault line.
A Van, a vibrant city with many apartment buildings, at least 50 people were treated at the court of public hospitals, state-owned Anatolia news agency said. “There are so many deaths. Several buildings have collapsed. There is too much destruction,” said Zulfikar Arapoglu, the mayor of Erciş, NTV television. “We need urgent help. We need doctors.” Serious damage and injuries were also reported in the Erciş Celebibag District near.
